Why did Carlson mercy kill candy's old dog?
Candy had an old stinky and smelly dog "the best damn sheep dog I ever seen" (44). But now the dog is in constant pain with not being able to eat, walk, or sleep very well. Carlson firmly brings up the possibility of mercy killing Candy's dog. But Candy had "had him from a pup" (44) and was having trouble letting go such a big part of his life. Carlson did not want to kill the old dog because he was mean and hated the dog, he knew that Slim had a liter of dogs, and this old dog didn't have any more purpose to be living. After Carlson took the dog out and killed it, Slim kindly told candy "you can have a pup if you want to" (45).
I liked your blog. He probably did it because if you didn't have any teeth, he couldn't see, and he had rheumatism. If you had all of these things you would probably want some high strength Advil or to be put out of your misery. In this situation, he was actually helping the dog more than he was hurting the dog because he made the dog not suffer anymore. I hope this helps.
ReplyDeletePeter, I very much agree with your statement. Carlson really had hatred, and no true feelings for the poor creature. This is because the dog smelled bad, looked bad, and had to beneficial use for the ranch workers. Carlson also had no attachment to this dog either because the dog is always with Candy ,nobody really pays attention to the dog (other than Candy). This is why it takes Carlson, barely anytime to let go of the dog by killing it, and telling Candy to just raise up another of Slim's dogs. To Carlson the dog was just Candy's dog, nothing more and nothing less.
