Blog 4: Crooks Brings out a Message

In part 4 of the book Of Mice and Men, the Character Crooks is introduced to the readers. Crooks is an African-American stable buck. Crooks seems like a very independent and self reliant character. He was in his bunk in the harness room, which consists of a long box filled with straw and some blankets. In the room, "On the wall by the window there were pegs... in process if being mended, and under the window itself a little bench for leather-working tools, curved knives and needles and balls of linen thread, and a small hand riveter." The significance of this quote is to convey the message that African-Americans were not treated fairly at all. They were not seen as equals. So much so that they were put in the same rooms with tools and were used as tools. This proves how horrifying it must have been for slaves and African-Americans.
